Light into Darkness – the science event

Science makes the world a better place.

In the Light into Darkness science event we will hear lectures from different fields of science, discuss science, get to know various scientific projects and innovations, and experience science together. The event spreads the light of science onto the public debate and people’s everyday lives.

In 2015, the theme of the event is  ”Future - now”. It will be organised in the Tampere Hall on Saturday 17 January 2015 at 10-15.

The Light into Darkness science event that will take place next Saturday highlights future possibilities. Some of the programme is organised in English.

In Sorsapuistosali, the School of Information Sciences (SIS) at the University of Tampere showcases the virtual technology projects they undertake in cooperation with Indian researchers.

SIS has developed a mobile application for farmers in Karnataka, a multimodal user interface for pregnant women currently used in Assam and an interactive application that helps autistic children in the Delhi slums.

Schools in the Pirkanmaa region are currently testing the City Compass application for embodied experiences of learning English with pupils in a Delhi slum. The application makes use of virtual cityscapes. In the Light into Darkness event, professor Markku Turunen and doctoral student Sumira Sharma will make direct contact with their cooperation partners in Delhi.

The United Nations has named 2015 the International Year of Light. Professor Martti Kauranen from the Tampere University of Technology will speak about this topic and English-language videos will also be shown.

The Light into Darkness science event takes place at the Tampere Hall on Saturday 17 January at 10-15. The event is organised in cooperation by the University of Tampere, Tampere University of Technology, Tampere University of Applied Sciences, Police University College, Tampere Hall, Council of the Tampere Region, City of Tampere, Pirkanmaa Regional Fund of the Finnish Cultural Foundation and Aamulehti newspaper.

You are warmly welcome! The event is open for all free of charge.
