Light into Darkness – the science event

Science makes the world a better place.

In the Light into Darkness science event we will hear lectures from different fields of science, discuss science, get to know various scientific projects and innovations, and experience science together. The event spreads the light of science onto the public debate and people’s everyday lives.

2016

Light into Darkness science event investigates memory

In January 2016, the Light into Darkness science event will look at memory. Why is memory so important and how does it work? What do we remember and why? What do we forget? Can you choose what you remember? What will life become after you no longer remember things as easily as you used to?

The lectures of the science event will be held in the small auditorium of Tampere Hall.  Senior researcher Marja Saarenheimo will talk about confusing memory and docent Marja-Leena Linne from Tampere University of Technology about the neurobiological mechanisms of remembering and learning; Academy of Finland Senior Research Fellow Anna-Kaisa Kuusisto-Arponen from the University of Tampere will talk about the memories of unaccompanied child refugees. Doctor Timo Korander from the Police University College will lecture on criminological memory; culture and human rights journalist Maila-Katriina Tuominen’s topic is visual memory and Professor Mikko Lehtonen from the University of Tampere will talk about how we forget in order to live and remember in order to live well.

Children’s academy will start

Children’s academy will start in Tampere at the beginning of 2016. The first lecture intended for an audience of children will be organised at the Light into Darkness science event. The lecture is titled “Prick up your ears: How to become a soundscape professional in one hour” and it will be held by researcher Meri Kytö.

The idea of children’s academy is to use interesting topics to encourage children to question, find answers and do research. At the university, children will become familiar with the question setting of different disciplines and with scientific solutions.

The children’s academy will be launched by the University of Tampere, Tampere University of Technology, the LUMATE Centre and the cultural and museum services of the City of Tampere.

The Light into Darkness science event will fill Tampere Hall with researchers, scientific innovations, discussions and art. The 2016 science event will also take a look back at past decades and disseminate information on the cultural and welfare services for elderly people offered by the City of Tampere.

In 2016, the Light into Darkness event will be organised for the fifth time. The event has annually brought over 1,200 science enthusiasts from Tampere and elsewhere to Tampere Hall.

The organisers include the University of Tampere, Tampere University of Technology, Tampere University of Applied Sciences, the Police University College, Tampere Hall, the City of Tampere, the Council of Tampere Region and Aamulehti newspaper.

The language of the event is Finnish, but there is a lot to see:

3D, robots, Age Estimation in the Wild, Invisibility cloak, Rainbowlaser,

Academic Games, Uta Dance  Group, Scientific demos, science club for children a.o.

The Light into Darkness event will begin at Tampere Hall on Saturday 23 January 2016 at 10 and continue until 15 o’clock. The event is open to all free of charge. The language of the event is Finnish.
