Winter Sports in Tampere
Cross Country Skiing: There are about 80km of illuminated tracks for cross country skiing in Tampere. The tracks are located in and around the city centre in many places. The three largest areas for cross country skiing are Kauppi-Niihama skiing tracks located in the Kauppi Sports Park, Lamminpää-Julkujärvi skiing tracks and Suolijärvi skiing tracks located in the suburb of Hervanta by the lake Suolijärvi. Skating: Skating can be done in the ice stadiums and also in many outdoor places located in and around the city centre during the winter time. There are ice stadiums for example in the suburbs of Hervanta and Tesoma (public skating in Hervanta on Saturdays at 11.15 - 12.15 and public skating in Tesoma every day, except Saturday, at 10.15 - 11.30). The outdoor skating rinks are mainly located in the vicinity of schools and day care centres. There are skating rinks located for example in the following addresses: Koulukatu (near the city centre), F.E. Sillanpäänkatu (in the area of Pyynikki) and Kemianraitti (near the lake Ahvenisjärvi in the suburb of Hervanta). In the wintertime there is also a tour skating track open on the lake Näsijärvi near the city centre (a good starting point for the track is for example in the Mustalahti Harbour near the Särkänniemi Adventure Park). Downhill Skiing: Slopes for downhill skiing and snowboarding can be found in the suburb of Hervanta and in Mustavuori. There are also some bigger skiing resorts located in the vicinity of Tampere: e.g. Himos Skiing Resort (about 95 km from Tampere) and Sappee Skiing Resort (about 50km from Tampere). Ice Swimming: There is also a possibility to try ice swimming in Tampere during the wintertime. There are several places for this and some of them have saunas too. One of the most popular places is the Rauhaniemi sauna (address: Rauhaniementie 24). For more information: Tampere Winter Recreation GoTampere Winter Activities Guide SITR/ Maria Virtanen 12.1.2011
