The universities of the
Tampere Region, University of Tampere (UTA), Tampere University of Technology
(TUT), and Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) will jointly organize
an Intensive Language Course on
Finnish Language, Society and Culture for Hungarian Erasmus students in
Tampere, Finland August 1-19, 2011.
The course is organized in honour of the 90-year-old diplomatic relations between Hungary and Finland (1920-2010). This year Hungary has held the EU presidency for the first time, which makes the course even more well-timed. The course is co-funded by the Government of Finland, Elcoteq, Nokia-Siemens Networks and Sanoma Budapest.
Students registered in a Higher education institution in Hungary holding an ERASMUS University Charter who have been selected for an ERASMUS study or placement period in Finland are eligible to participate. The level of the course is basics (A1), i.e. it is for those who have not studied Finnish before. Applicants from various fields of study and from all around Hungary are welcome.

The contact teaching of Finnish language, and the activities and trips related to Finnish society, business life and culture are free of charge for the chosen participants. The participants will have to pay for their travel , accommodation, meals and other possible costs of living.
Student accommodation located in the city centre of Tampere close to the university is pre-booked for the participants. 2 or 3 students will share a room together.
The course will consist of Finnish language contact teaching and lectures, activities and trips related to Finnish society, business life and culture. Contact teaching will be organized on weekdays.
The weekends will be free time for exploring the city and its sights, the Tampere region, and/or other Finnish cities within easy reach from Tampere.
Tampere is the largest inland city in the Nordic countries and the hometown of several innovations like the world´s first GSM call. The Tampere Region is the 2nd largest region in Finland with its half a million inhabitants. Tampere city
itself has approximately 230,000 inhabitants. Tampere is situated
in southern Finland 173 kilometres north from Helsinki, the
capital of Finland.
Tampere is the most popular city to live and study in Finland according to several national surveys. It is known as a vibrant centre of culture, sports, events, research, education and business. It is located between two lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi surrounded by large green forest areas and beautiful Nordic nature. The Tammerkoski rapids run through the city.

Tampere is known for its rich array of cultural attractions, with several theatres and art museums and various types of annual festivals. Tampere 42nd theatre festival will be organized in August, 2011. It is the oldest annual professional theatre festival in the Nordic countries. It gathers together theatre professionals from different fields in a unique way – drama, street theatre, music theatre, dance theatre, performances, workshops, seminars, exhibitions, meetings.
Tampere has a number of sporting facilities and recreation areas including the Kauppi Sports Area. It offers a large park and forest area with soccer field, archery and rifle ranges, a bowling alley, tennis courts and jogging trails. There are four indoor swimming pools and 37 beaches in Tampere.
There are also several cinemas, bars,
restaurants, discos, and night clubs in Tampere.
