Summer School on Finnish Language and Culture 2012

University students under a treeThe three universities in the Tampere Region, University of Tampere (UTA), Tampere University of Technology (TUT), and Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) will jointly organize a Summer School on Finnish Language and Culture in Tampere July 30th - August 17th 2012.

The course is open for students coming from outside the European Union (EU) and accepted as exchange/degree students at TAMK, TUT or UTA for the academic year 2012-2013.* The level of the course is basics (A1), i.e. it is for those who have not studied Finnish before. The tuition is free of charge. However, for registration, course materials and some leisure activities a nominal fee of 130 euros will be charged. The amount of participants for the course is limited.

*If there is room, some extra students may also be admitted. However, the extra students need to pay a course fee of 500 euros. This fee covers registration, tuition, course materials, and some leisure activities. If you are not a student of UTA, TUT or TAMK, mention in your application that you are an "extra student".

About the programme

The course will consist of contact teaching of Finnish language and lectures on Finnish Society and Culture. Contact teaching will be organized on weekdays. In addition, some leisure activities and trips will be organised.

Tampere is the largest inland city in the Nordic countries. The urbanized Tampere region has a growing population of about 450,000. In the city itself there are approximately 230,000 inhabitants. Tampere is situated in southern Finland 173 kilometres north from Helsinki, the capital of Finland.

Tampere is known for its rich array of cultural attractions, with several theatres and art museums and various types of annual festivals. Tampere 43rd theatre festival will be organized in August, 2012. It is the oldest annual professional theatre festival in the Nordic countries. It gathers together theatre professionals from different fields in a unique way – drama, street theatre, music theatre, dance theatre, performances, workshops, seminars, exhibitions, meetings. 

Tampere has a number of sporting facilities and recreation areas including the Kauppi Sports Area. It offers a large park and forest area with soccer field, archery and rifle ranges, a bowling alley, tennis courts and jogging trails. There are four indoor swimming pools and 37 beaches in Tampere.

There are also several cinemas, bars, restaurants, discos, and night clubs in Tampere.


How to apply for the SITR Summer School

The application period for SITR Summer School 2012 will start May 7, 2012 and it will end June 8, 2012.

Please note that your application does not automatically entitle you to participate in the course. All the applicants will be contacted in June after the application period has ended.

Application form is valid during 7 May at 00.01 - 8 June at 23.59 (Finnish time).
