Background to the Symposium

Photograph © Manuel ScrimaIn recent years medical research has made great progress. We now know a lot about the causes of disease and about the wider reasons for poor health.

However, taking this knowledge from the lab through to products that actually improve the health of the people of the world is advancing much more slowly.

Modern medicine has hardly any impact on large parts of the globe, and major epidemics continue to cause devastation.

Everyone working in the health sector: scientists, doctors, policymakers and support staff, is frustrated by the slow progress in improving the lives of people in the poorest countries.

The purpose of the "Molecular Biology and Global Health Challenges" -symposium was to discuss and define a strategy for bringing together scientific innovation, business, and global social development.
