SOVAKO Winter School, March 16th 2016, Jyväskylä

SOVAKO (Finnish Doctoral Program in Social Sciences) organizes Winter School in Jyväskylä a day before Sosiologipäivät (the annual conference of the Westermarck Society). The call is now open for all students of social sciences who are doing their PhD in a Finnish university. The program of the winter school consists of a lecture and workshops. The lecture will be given by Professor Pertti Alasuutari (University of Tampere, Finland). The workshops will be supervised by professors Pertti Alasuutari, Risto Heiskala and other SOVAKO board members.

The deadline for applying for the winter school is Wednesday 17th February at 12 p.m. The applications should be sent to the coordinator Pekka Rantanen (pekka.j.rantanen@uta.fi). The e-mail should include information on your discipline, university, and who is (are) the supervisor(s) of your doctoral thesis. By the same e-mail, please submit a short paper (no longer than two pages) where you describe the research problem of your thesis and identify three current problems in the research process. The submitted papers will form the basis for the workshop discussions and they will be distributed to the winter school attendees in advance. The board of SOVAKO selects 24 PhD students to the winter school. The coordinator informs selected PhD students 25th February at the latest.

SOVAKO pays for the participants (reasonable) travel expenses (receipts required), accommodation in a two-person room in Hotel Alexandra 16.3. (and following night for persons attending the Sociology conference), a dinner in the restaurant Harmooni (Väinönkatu 1, 40100 Jyväskylä), and the participation fee of sosiologipäivät (for those who attend the conference after the winter school).

14.00–17.30 (Lecture rooms: OPK 136, OPK 141, OPK 226, OPK 330) Workshops (three groups, discussion based on the papers submitted by participants)*

20.00– Dinner, Ravintola Harmooni (Väinönkatu 1, 40100 Jyväskylä)

*Workshops both in English and in Finnish.

SOVAKO (Finnish Doctoral Program in Social Sciences) organizes Winter School in Helsinki just before Sosiologipäivät (the annual conference of the Westermarck Society). The call is now open for all students of social sciences who are doing their PhD in a Finnish university. The program of the winter school consists of a lecture and workshops. The lecture will be given by Professor Lisa Adkins (University of Newcastle, Australia). The workshops will be supervised by professors Risto Heiskala, Markku Lonkila, Anna-Maija Pirttilä-Backman, Hannu Ruonavaara, and Juho Saari.

The deadline for enrolling in the winter school is Friday 6th February at 12 p.m. The applications should be sent to the coordinator Jukka Syväterä (jukka.syvatera@uta.fi). The e-mail should include information on your discipline, university, and who is (are) the supervisor(s) of your doctoral thesis. By the same e-mail, please submit a short paper (no longer than two pages) where you describe the research problem of your thesis and identify three current problems in the research process.
