Sovako Winter School Wednesday 22nd March 2017 in Tampere

SOVAKO (Finnish Social Research Doctoral Program) arranges the traditional winter school a day before the annual sociology conference. All social sciences doctoral students may apply. Program includes guest lectures, participation to one working group and an evening dinner.

2017 Winter school brings to you top selection of international star speakers and teachers!

Working group teachers are Robert Beauregard, Annemarie Mol and Iddo Tavory. Two lectures are given by Stjepan Mestrovic and Iddo Tavory.

Topics of the Workshops:

  • Robert Beauregaard: Urban Studies
  • Salla Sariola: Anthropology of bodily practices and caring processes
  • Iddo Tavory: Ethnography and Interaction

You can apply to one working group. Each working group teachers want a slightly different abstracts. Language used will be English.

  • Urban studies: Send a 450 word abstract that explains the aim of your doctoral dissertation in nutshell.
  • Anthropology of bodily practices and caring processes: Send a 450 word abstract that explains the aim of your doctoral dissertation in nutshell. In addition, to prepare questions concerning your own work to which you wish Mol to answer and send them with your application, as well.
  • Ethnography and interaction: Send a 450 word abstract that explains the aim of your doctoral dissertation in nutshell. In addition, send 3–5 pages of your ethnographic material, or any other material, which includes interactional elements (for example, Facebook or chat interaction). Send such material that is essential to your research questions and interpretations.

Please send your application for the winter school by 22nd of February 2017 by e-mail to the SOVAKO coordinator Pekka Rantanen (pekka.j.rantanen@uta.fi). Attachments can be either a Word or PDF files.

Each group will be a maximum of 10 participants. The selection is made on the basis of applications. Mention in your application, the group to which you want to participate. Also tell us to which university you do your doctoral studies and who are your supervisors.

The coordinator informs selected PhD students 2nd of March 2017 at the latest.

SOVAKO pays for the accepted participants traveling from outside Tampere (reasonable) travel expenses (receipts required), accommodation in a two-person room in a hotel for one night (between 22nd and 23rd), and evening dinner in a restaurant Wednesday 22nd March 2017.

15.00–16.00: Stjepan Mestrovic lecture: “Postemotionalism and Balkanization”

16.15–17.45 Iddo Tavoryn lecture: "From Religion to the Political: Would you want to live in a dense moral

world?"

19.30– Evening Dinner
