The academic year

At the University of Tampere, the academic year is divided into four periods.

Spring semester 2016

Period III: 11 January–6 March 2016
Period IV: 7 March–29 May 2016

Autumn semester 2016

Period I: 29 August – 23 October 2016
Period II: 24 October – 16 December 2016

Spring semester 2017

Period III: 9 January – 5 March 2017
Period IV: 6 March – 28 May 2017

The second period is followed by a Christmas vacation that lasts until the start of the third period. In addition to the Christmas break, there is a four-day Easter vacation in March or April. No examinations are arranged during the breaks and vacations and, additionally, there are some public holidays on which there is no instruction. The University does not have an actual summer semester, although programmes, lectures and examinations can be offered during summer. In general, the University’s Schools and libraries are open throughout the summer.

Curricula and the structure of studies

Please see the curricula of the doctoral programmes at the School of Social Sciences and Humanities (YKY) for studies that are required for the doctoral degree.

The studies are structured in the same way in each doctoral programme of the School.

The Doctor’s degree includes studies (240 ECTS) as follows:

 1. Joint doctoral studies

 2. Broad and profound knowledge of the student’s own discipline and field of research

 3. Dissertation

Each doctoral programme has its own more detailed curriculum. You can see from the curriculum of your own doctoral programme what kind of studies are required and how you can pursue these studies.

Personal study plan / agreement on supervision and reporting the studies

Please fill in the personal study plan / agreement on supervision form according to the curriculum of your own doctoral programme as soon as possible after getting started with your studies.

-          The web page of the curricula of the doctoral programmes has links to

  • the teaching schedule of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities (YKY) where you can find courses, seminars and lectures given by the School’s doctoral programmes
  • the web pages of the University of Tampere Doctoral School where you can find information on the joint doctoral courses offered at the University of Tampere
  • the academic record NettiOpsu where you can check the studies registered in your academic record
  • web pages of the Registrar’s office where you must enrol as present every academic year and where you can get an official transcript of your academic records when necessary

The curricula include two compulsory courses, philosophy of science and research ethics, offered by the University of Tampere Doctoral School. The students of the doctoral programme in philosophy are exempt from pursuing the philosophy of science course. It is recommended that these courses are taken at the beginning of the doctoral studies.

In addition to the compulsory courses mentioned above, it is recommended that you take courses on funding applications, managing the research process and writing the research plan organised by the Doctoral School at the beginning of the studies.

The compulsory doctoral studies also include giving a presentation at the YKY Seminar. It is recommended that you give the presentation at the mid-point of your doctoral studies. The speakers meet before the seminar to decide on the theme of the seminar based on the speakers’ dissertations. The speakers submit an abstract of their presentations to the study coordinator one week before the seminar at the latest. The abstract will be published on the web pages of the School. The seminar will be held in English. The time of the YKY Seminar will be announced through the yky-jatko email list.

After filling the form for personal study plan / agreement on supervision, please make an appointment to meet your supervisor. The supervisor will check the form in the meeting.  When the form is completed and signed, take a photocopy of it for yourself and send it to one of the following persons to be entered in your academic record:

Pertti Vuorilehmus: doctoral programme in psychology and logopedics

Terhi Raitanen: doctoral programmes in philosophy, history and social sciences

               Emails: firstname.surname@uta.fi

The personal study plan / agreement on supervision will be updated with the supervisor as needed.

Reporting the studies

After the meeting, please send the report form for registration to one of the following people:

Pertti Vuorilehmus: doctoral programme in psychology and logopedics

Entering studies and overall grades in the academic record

The ECTS credits of courses and seminars held at the University of Tampere will be entered in the academic record by UTA. Other forms of studies (writing articles or essays, teaching) or studies completed at another university must first be accepted by your supervisor. An official transcript of the academic record of the other university is required. After the supervisor’s acceptance, information on the studies will be sent to one of the following people for entering in the academic record:

Pertti Vuorilehmus: doctoral programme in psychology and logopedics

Terhi Raitanen: doctoral programmes in philosophy, history and social sciences.

               Emails: firstname.surname@uta.fi

You can check your academic record by using NettiOpsu. You can ask for a transcript of your academic records at the Registrar’s office.

Funding the studies

A student should fund his/her doctoral studies independently. The Aurora database is a good place to search for funding. You can also ask your supervisor for tips about good sources of funding.

For more information on funding doctoral studies, please see the web pages of the University of Tampere Doctoral School.

Grants for travelling and proofreading

If the budget permits, the School of Social Sciences and Humanities can award grants for travelling or proofreading dissertation manuscripts. Travel grants have been awarded for travelling to international conferences where the students have presented papers. The Dean of the School makes decisions about the grants once a year in January/February. An announcement of the grant application period will be sent through yky-jatko email list in January/February.

You can also look at the Aurora database for announcements of travel grants.
