Remembering the Tragedy of Lampedusa: radical participation in documentary film making (2017 - 2018)

Project Leader: Karina Horsti

Team: MA, film maker Anna Blom, PhD student Ilaria Tucci, refugee activist Adal Neguse

This participatory documentary film project examines the constitution of national and diasporic memory by focusing on the memories of one shipwreck, the so-called Tragedy of Lampedusa of 3rd October 2013. We produce five short documentary films designed to be shared in social media and in mobile devices. In addition, the project develops and analyzes participatory methods in film making. Artistic and scholarly work entangle in this project, which develops a radical participatory method in both research and cultural production.

The project is funded by the KONE Foundation.

Migration, movement of labour and multiethnic cities from the Middle Ages to the Present (2016 - 2017)

Project Leader: Maija Ojala (University of Tampere)

Team: PhD Pirita Frigren, PhD Ulla Ijäs, D.Soc.Sci Anitta Kynsilehto, PhD Riitta Laitinen, PhD Student Henrik Mattjus, D.Soc.Sci Samu Pehkonen, PhD Student Ilaria Tucci, PhD Ella Viitaniemi.

This multidisciplinary, international project investigates migration and mobility of people from long durée perspective tracing continuities and changes from the 16th century on-wards. Our key themes are mobility, (multi)ethnicity and urban space. In our book we present 10 case studies that help us to understand better the complex phenomenon migration and mobility.

The project co-operates with The Institute of Migration (Turku, Finland), The Finnish Institute in Germany (Berlin) and the International Research Training Group (IRTG) Baltic Borderlands: Shifting Boundaries of Mind and Culture in the Borderlands of the Baltic Sea Region (Ernst Moritz Arndt Universität Greifswald, Germany). The project is partly funded by the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
