Mika’s current research activities are particularly related to the Unit's new research program on Evolving innovation systems (2010-2020). Within this program, he studies the changes occurring in modes and organization of innovation activities (e.g. service and open innovations, inclusive innovation, innovation communities) which often combine both close geographical proximity and access to worldwide sources of ideas and competences. His long-term interests are related to, on the one hand, those effects that different innovation systems and their institutions have on innovation activities, and, on the other hand, those major effects innovation activities have on innovation systems (regional, national etc.) and on societies at large. He applies both quantitative and qualitative methods in his research.
Mika has approximately one hundred publications ranging from international peer-reviewed journal articles (in e.g. Regional Studies, European Planning Studies, Service Industries Journal, Innovation and Development) to EU FP research reports further to consulting reports for e.g. Finnish government, local governments or private companies. He has given presentations and lectures in a number of countries. His mission is to combine research to social impact through, for example, participatory action research and extensive collaboration with public and private organizations as partners.
