Position: Postdoctoral Researcher, TaSTI, 2015–2020
Research interests: Ali Qadir received his doctorate in social anthropology from the University of Tampere in 2011. His dissertation, entitledTangential Modernity: Culture of Higher Education Reform in Pakistan has been published by the University of Tampere Press. His research has concentrated on global & transnational sociology, as well as sociology of religion (especially Islam). His recent work has studied national policymaking in modern world culture, as well as transnational religious movements, including a globally embedded understanding of radicalization amongst modern Muslims as a world cultural phenomenon. He has also written on social justice and social development movements. He has published in the European Journal for Cultural and Political Sociology, Sociology of Religion, South Asian Studies Journal, Media Culture & Society, Asian Journal of Communication, and Pakistan Journal of History and Culture, in addition to a number of book chapters. He teaches two extended courses in the Master's Degree on Global & Transnational Sociology. Besides his scholarly research and teaching, Dr. Qadir has over a dozen years of experience in social, political, and environmental development in international civil society. He has also published two-dozen works for general and professional communities, including briefs for policymakers on sustainable development and on radicalization of Muslims. Dr. Qadir is an active member of the European Sociological Association’s Research Network on Global & Transnational Sociology as well as various international associations for sociology and for sociology of religion. He is presently guest editing a special issue on Neoinstitutionalism and World Society Theory for the European Journal of Cultural & Political Sociology. Ali Qadir has been a research fellow at the University of Tampere’s Institute for Advanced Social Research, as well as member of Academy-funded TCuPS research projects.
