History

The history-program at the University of Tampere is known for its wide range of expertise. The general focus of our research is in the field of social history ranging from antiquity to contemporary times.

The history courses are mainly offered only in Finnish. For the international students, Finnish History Seminar serves as an introduction to the history and culture of Finland from prehistoric times to the present. It serves as first unit for the Nordic Perspective on European History -program.

Depending on the given academic years also other courses can be offered in English. Moreover, North American Studies organizes its own courses in English, some of which can be used for history studies if agreed with teacher responsible for the course unit in history. Under the "Teaching in English" -link (on left panel) you'll find the courses lectured in English.

Most of the study modules can be taken by book exams . You can also write essays, but the subject and length of the essay must always be agreed with the professor. The staff will be happy to answer any questions concerning studies.

The discipline of History is part of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities. Rooms of the teachers are now located in the Pinni B building, 2th floor.

Regarding administrative issues you are kindly asked to contact the HR Specialist Ms Sari Pasto sari.pasto(at)uta.fi (+358 3 3551 6154). Exchange students are advised to contact the Coordinator Mr Touko Berry touko.berry(at)uta.fi (+358 33551 7154).
