Finnish History Seminar - Spring Term 2012

The seminar will meet 26.1.-29.3. on Thursdays, 4-6 pm (16.15-17.45). Exceptions: No seminar on 8.3. (2-4 CREDITS)

The seminar serves as an introduction to the history and culture of Finland. It gives the basic information of the history of Finland from prehistoric times to the present; with focus on those events and phenomena that are especially important for understanding the culture and society of Finland. No previous studies in Finnish history are required.

  • The seminar program consists mainly of lectures and seminar-type sessions. On their essays, the students will be able to concentrate on themes which they find the most interesting. Students may earn 2-4 credits according to their activity:
  • For 4 credits: Participation in the lectures and an essay outline + an essay (8-10pages) of a chosen topic.
  • For 2 credits: Participation in the lectures/tutorials and a seminar diary.

It is also possible to complete other study units of the Nordic Perspectives - programme by doing research papers in the Finnish History Seminar. These alternative arrangements should be agreed with both the person in charge of the Finnish History Seminar and teachers in charge of the individual study unit.
