Workshop on new institutionalism

TCuPS organizes a workshop "New Institutionalisms in Sociology" in Sosiologipäivät (the annual conference of The Westermarck Society) in Tampere, March 23-24.

In sociological institutionalism human action is conceived to be guided by institutions – symbols, scripts, moral templates and organizational arrangements that not only frame the meaning of acts and objects but also confer actors’ identities. Other varieties of new institutionalism (e.g., historical, rational choice or discursive institutionalism) may have different definitions of institution, but the common starting point for them is the idea that the social world and actors’ decision-making cannot be understood without taking into account the institutional environment, which sets conditions for the possible moves of actors and influences the ways actors expect others to behave. There are, however, significant differences between these varieties when it comes to explaining institutional change or defining the relationship between institutions and behavior.

The workshop calls for presentations that utilize, develop or criticize new institutional approaches in studying social, political and cultural phenomena. Presentations drawing from any subfield of institutionalism are welcome. Presentations can be based on empirical research, or they can address methodological or theoretical issues related to new institutional approaches in sociology.

The final deadline for the abstracts is Sunday 22.1.2017. Please submit your abstract via following link:
