Water and Society – Argumenta seminars 2011-12 in Tampere

Management of water resources and water services are currently under public discussion worldwide. A multidisciplinary series of seminars focusing on long-term development of water services and communities will be held in Tampere starting next spring. The seminars aim at creating and promoting discussion and presenting the views of researchers of various fields to decision-makers.

The seminar series is headed by Adjunct Professor Petri S. Juuti from the University of Tampere, School of Social Sciences and Humanities. The seminars will be co-hosted by the International Environmental History Group (IEHG) at the University of Tampere, the Capacity Development in Water and Environmental Services (CADWES) team at Tampere University of Technology, and the joint International Centre for Environmental Services Governance Research (ICES) formed by the IEHG and CADWES teams. Some of the presentations will be held in English by invited international experts.

Argumenta funding is intended to stimulate dialogue between researchers in different fields of science on significant current subjects of research. From time to time the Finnish Cultural Foundation requests proposals from university departments or scientific organizations for initiating Argumenta projects. Our Water and Society (In Finnish: Vesi ja yhdyskuntien kehitys) Argumenta series is funded for 2011-2012.

The 1st seminar will be held on Tuesday, 24th of May, 2011.

Time: Tuesday 24.5.2011, 9.30-17.00

There will be two lectures in English by professors Tempelhoff and Odira. Otherwise seminar will be conducted in Finnish.

Vesi ja yhdyskuntien kehitys –seminaarit herättelevät keskustelua vesihuollosta

Vesivaroista ja vesihuollosta keskustellaan eri puolilla maailmaa kiivaasti. Tampereella järjestetään ensi keväästä alkaen monitieteinen seminaarisarja, jossa tarkastellaan vesihuollon ja yhdyskuntien pitkän aikavälin kehitystä. Tavoitteena on herättää keskustelua ja tuoda eri alojen tutkijoiden näkemykset myös päättäjien tietoon. Vesi ja yhdyskuntien kehitys -seminaarisarjaa johtaa ja koordinoi dosentti Petri S. Juuti Tampereen yliopiston Yhteiskunta- ja kulttuuritieteiden yksiköstä. Toteuttajina ovat Tampereen yliopiston (TAY) Ympäristöhistorian ja tekniikan historian tutkimusryhmä ja Tampereen teknillisen yliopiston (TTY) CADWES-ryhmä sekä mm. näiden ryhmien muodostama Ympäristöpalveluiden ja johtamisen tutkimuskeskus.

Suomen Kulttuurirahasto tukee seminaarisarjaa niin sanottuna Argumenta-hankkeena tutkijoiden ja tieteiden välisen keskustelun herättämiseksi.
