Language and social action: A comparative study of affiliation and disaffiliation across national communities and institutional contexts.

The project span from 1.1.2003-31.12.2007

The participant countries were: United Kingdom, Denmark, Finland, Italy, and Sweden

The research project has collaborated with two other research groups: The ICAR (Interactions, Corpus, Apprentissages, Représentations) group at Lyons2 university, France, and the Multimodal Interaction project at the Max Planck institute in the Netherlands.

There have been three collaborative research consortiums: - Sätra Brunn, Sweden, September 26–28, 2003. - York, United Kingdom, October 1–3, 2004. - Bertinoro, Italy, September 29–October 2, 2005. - A final meeting was held during the International Conference on Conversation Analysis, Helsinki, Finland, May 10–14, 2006.

In addition to the meetings listed above there have been several individual research exchanges between the national research groups.

Presentations in conferences and national symposia:

The project organized three panels at the International Conference on Conversation Analysis, Helsinki, Finland, May 10–14, 2006 where participants from each of the national group presented.

The UK national project organized and hosted two workshops on phonetics and conversation, January 2005 and March 2006. These were attended by PhD students, post-doctoral researchers (including from ESF project partners) and established academics from the UK (Glasgow, Cambridge, UCL, Essex, Loughborough), the USA, Finland, Sweden, Estonia, the Netherlands, Germany.

The Finnish and Swedish national projects held a joint workshop on Stance and affiliation with the stance taking project (University of Oulu) and the researchers in the Swedish ESF-subproject at the annual meeting of AFinLA (Association Finlandaise de Linguistique Appliquée), Oulu November 12–13, 2004.
