Mika Kautonen’s current research activities are particularly related to the Unit's new research program on Evolving innovation systems. In connection with this, he studies the changes occurring in modes and organization of innovation activities (e.g. service and open innovations, innovation communities) which often combine both close geographical proximity and access to worldwide sources of ideas and competences. His long-term interests are geared to, on the one hand, those effects that different innovation systems and their institutions have on innovation activities, and, on the other hand, those major effects innovation activities have on innovation systems (regional, national etc.) and on societies at large.
