CRISIS AND THE GLOBAL NORDIC

The Second Workshop
in the Series Crisis and Nordic Identities

May 29-30, 2012, University of Tampere

of Iceland) and Lars Jensen (Roskilde University).

Seiding (Ilisimatusarfik - University of Greenland). The workshop
series is composed of three workshops held during the period
2011-2012, funded by NOS-HS.

The contemporary world seems increasingly to be seen as characterized
by crisis, which is often seen as a "rupture" in how things are and
should be, which ignores those facing "crisis" on everyday basis
globally and locally. Also, crisis can be seen as bringing to the
surface aspects of competing basic value systems that normally are
difficult to detect.

In this workshop, we place the Nordic within a global perspective
focusing on the global, transnational world and how the local and
global are entangled within the Nordic. We especially focus on
financial crisis, environmental crisis and crisis of multiculturalism.
 What are the dynamic relations between notions of Europe, Nordic and
the global and how do transnational connections within the global
world at times of crisis play out in a Nordic context? Focus could,
for example, involve questions in regard to how notions such as
cosmopolitanism shape or interact with ideas of crisis. How do Nordic
bodies travel through differently assigned spaces? How are these
bodies described and categorized? We seek papers from broad
interdisciplinary perspectives from different fields within the social
sciences and humanities.

General information:
The deadline for abstracts is March 20th.
Please submit your abstract (maximum 250 words) to all main
organizers: kristinl@hi.is, hopeless@ruc.dk, anna.rastas@uta.fi .
At the top of the abstract, state your institutional affiliation and
status if you are a student.  Please make very clear how your paper
addresses the theme of the workshop.

By April 3rd we will let you know whether the abstract has been
accepted.  Please state if you wish to get reimbursed for travel and
accommodation expenses. We will be able to accommodate a large part of
the cost for limited number of participants, but some participants
will have to fund their travel and accommodation.
