PHILOSOPHICAL DEFINITION OF ANGST
ANGST, a fundamental category of existentialism. According to the 19th-century philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, dread, or angst, is a desire for what one fears and is central to his conception of original sin. For the 20th-century German philosopher Martin Heidegger, anxiety is one of the distinctive ways through which Dasein (the historical person) is disclosed as a contingent being, and thus anxiety is that through which fear first becomes possible.

"But there is a mood, anxiety or dread (Angst), that functions to disclose (dis-close) authentic being, freedom (Frei-sein), as a potentiality. It manifests the freedom of man to choose himself and take hold of himself. The relevance of time, of the finiteness of human existence, is then experienced as a freedom to meet his own death (das Freisein für den Tod), a preparedness for and continuous relatedness to his own death (Sein zum Tode). In anxiety, all entities (Seiendes) sink away into a "nothing and nowhere," man hovers in himself as ex-sisting, being nowhere at home (Un-heimlichkeit, Un-zu-hause). He faces no-thing-ness (das Nichts); and all average, obvious everydayness disappears--and this is good, since he now faces the potentiality of authentic being." - Heidegger

WHAT IS ANGST? from alt.angst FAQ
Any feelings of anxiety, grief, unhappiness, suffering, misery, depression, sadness, and fear.

Above all, True Angst (tm) arises from the notion that life is essentially pointless and absurd, and that our miserable existences count for very little in the grand scheme of things. There are two main categories of Angst: emotional, and intellectual. Emotional Angst encompasses the typical experiences of human suffering. Intellectual Angst is primarily concerned with The Great Sucking Void of Existence.
