Hacking

The Conscience of a Hacker (The Hacker Manifesto) was written by a hacker around 1986. It is considered to be the cornerstone of hacking and hacker culture.

"This is our world now... the world of the electron and the switch, the beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without paying for what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn't run by profiteering gluttons, and you call us criminals. We explore... and you call us criminals. We seek after knowledge... and you call us criminals. We exist without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias... and you call us criminals. You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to us and try to make us believe it's for our own good, yet we're the criminals." [source: Hacker Manifesto]

This resulted that some subcultures expressed their manifesto as well. One of them was cyberpunks.

We are the ELECTRONIC MINDS, a group of free-minded rebels. Cyberpunks. We live in Cyberspace, we are everywhere, we know no boundaries. This is our manifest. The Cyberpunks' manifest. [source: A Cyberpunk Manifesto]

Everything is in motion and this applies to hackers as well. New rising phenomenon is hackerspaces movement. It's a global social movement which has boosted in numbers over the past few years.

What are Hackerspaces?

Hackerspaces are community-operated physical places, where people can meet and work on their projects.

A hackerspace or hackspace (from Hacker and Space, also referred to as a makerspace or creative space) is a real (as opposed to virtual) place where people with common interests, usually in science, technology, or digital or electronic art can meet, socialise and collaborate. A hackerspace can be viewed as an open community lab, workbench, machine shop, workshop and/or studio where people of diverse backgrounds can come together to share resources and knowledge to build/make things.[source: Wiki Hackerspace]

Sounds great, right? If you are in Tampere, it might be a good idea to get in touch with 5w.

5w - Hackerspace Tampere Finland

5w Hackerspace Logo

5w is a hackerspace located at Tampere, Finland. Activities are build around different member-run projects, which can include topics such as: 3D printers, quick prototyping, robotics and artificial intelligence, artistic applications and innovations. Whatever the content of your project is, we are here to DO things, be creative and have fun! We maintain and develop our space to ensure coziness and versatility of the facilities.

My input to 5w

Currently I hold a position in the board of 5w. 2009 I was the chairman. That does not mean that we (the board) rule and others obey. It's the community that runs and maintains itself for the most parts. Some areas like economical issues are in the hands of a trusted few.

I have a few projects in 5w, which are more or less active.

  • 5w-portal (Member)
  • CATSS - Cat Surveillance System (Owner). This project initialized 02.04.2010. Project page. Project is also in GitHub: http://wiki.github.com/kyber/catss/
  • Lurkki Bot (Owner). IRC channel bot to enable facebook interaction with IRC channel.

Linux hacking

Linux is an intresting object to learn. To know more about how things are done in linux, I hangaround with local linux users group called Linkku. To know what's happening with my current linux OS (Ubuntu), I have joined local Finnish Ubuntu Community.
