When are these postpositions used?

Jani asuu (minun) yläpuolellani, ja Mari (minun) alapuolellani. John lives above me and Mari lives below me. (NB. It is not necessary to use the minun here.)
Aurinko on maan yllä. The sun is above the earth.
Aurinko nousi maan ylle. The sun rose above the earth.
Tuu mun viereen! Come here! (Lit. Come to my side, next to me!)
Tuu mun vierelleni! Come here! (Lit. Come here beside me!)
Kissa on pöydän alla. The cat is under(neath) the table.
Lintuhäkki on pöydän yläpuolella. The birdcage is above the table.
Pöytäliina on pöydän päällä. The tablecloth is on top of the table.
Poimimme sieniä metsäpolun varrelta. We picked mushrooms along the sides of the path in the forest.
Suomessa on paljon kyliä, jotka ovat jokien ja koskien varrella. There are a lot of villages in Finland that are on the banks of rivers and rapids.
