Besides traveling, I also like having a good beer. The best way, of course, is to combine good beer and traveling, whenever possible. In May '97 I did that by visiting Erlanger Bergkirchweih and Bamberg, the city with the higest density of breweries per person in the world and home of the world famous Rauchbier. During the same trip I also visited the brewery of Pilsner Urquell, the original Pilsner bier, and the city of Ceske Budejovice, the home town of the original Budweiser Budwar, as well as the Golden City of Prague with microbrewries Novemestsky Pivovar and U Fleku. Have also a look at Prague Pub Guide.
I have visited Öllesummer Beer Festival in Tallinn, Estonia may times during the last few years. In July 2001 two Tampere Beer societies (Hämeen Tummat ja Vaaleat and Tooppi ry) visited Ölletoober Koduolu (which is close to Finnish sahti) Festival in Leisi, Saaremaa, Estonia. In 2005 I visited Stockholm Beer and Whisky Festival and Le Festival des Bières de Caractère, Brussels.
In my opinion most of the best beers of the world, however, are made in Belgium. The two most interesting brewery that I have visited so far are The Brussels' Gueze Museum at Cantillon Brewery and La Brasserie á Vapeur in Leuze-Pipaix. Many Czech beers are also very tasty. Good sources of information about beer are Olutopas (in Finnish) and Beer Hunter Online. For an American oriented point of view for beer see All About Beer.
On some evenings you can find me at Gastropub Tuulensuu, Gastropub Nordic, Gastropub Praha, Salhojankadun Pub or Pub Kahdet Kasvot. A longer list of beer restaurants in Tampere can be found at OlutTampere (short descriptions are available also in English). I am a member of beer society Hämeen Tummat ja Vaaleat, the organizer of the annual Olutsuunnistus. Last time it was held on Tuesday 26.8.2008. I am also a member and fund manager of Salhojankadun Olutseura ry.
