Appendix 2: Some Useful Tips and WWW Sites

LANTRA-L mailing list
You can find LANTRA-L's home page in the address: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/hniska/ltr.htm.
You can subscribe to the list if you can send and receive electronic mail. Send e-mail to the address listserv@searn.sunet.se. You need no subject. Write SUBSCRIBE LANTRA-L only to the message field. Note that an engine will receive your message, so there is no need for extra information or polite expressions. If you want to receive a list of general user commands, send a message to the listserv (for example same as above) address and write INFO REFCARD in the message field. Again, only address and message body need be specified. If you want to receive a list of all mailing lists available on a listserv, send a message to the listserv address and write Lists Global in the message field. You can also try the command Lists Global /xyz and the listserv will send you only the lists whose name contains xyz.
sci.lang.translation
is a Usenet newsgroup for translators and interpreters. Terminology questions are asked and answered, as well as other interesting and important issues discussed. Click here to take a look. (Note that your news provider may have chosen not to offer this group.)
WWW sites
If you use Netscape, type the address into the Location (or Go To) field at the top part of the window. In case you are using Lynx, you can type the URL after the command you use to start the program from the UNIX prompt (e.g. lynx http://www.altavista.digital.com/ ).
The best way to learn to use the Web is to dive right into it. At first, it will probably take a lot of time, but soon you will find your way about, and find entertainment and interesting information. After some hands-on training you will actually be able to find what you were looking for in the first place!
Translators' Home Companion
http://www.lai.com/lai/companion.html is a good place to start. This page includes a lot of useful information and links to other useful pages. It is updated constantly.
Search engines in the Web
Alta Vista (http://www.altavista.digital.com/), Yahoo (http://www.yahoo.com/), InfoSeek (http://www2.infoseek.com/) and several others. At the top part of a Netscape window there is a Net Search button. (In case it is not there, choose the Show Directory Buttons command from the Options menu.) If you click this button, a page with links to several search engines is opened.
