Tenure Track Career System
The University of Tampere employs a tenure track system that complements its four-level career model for faculty members. The purpose of the tenure track system is to encourage motivated and talented faculty members to pursue their academic career at the University of Tampere and to commit themselves to the University. In the tenure track system, post-doctoral researchers are employed on a fixed-term contract for three to five years and university lecturers, clinical instructors, university researchers and associate professors for five years. Faculty members may advance from one level to the next in the tenure track system, the final level being an open-ended professorship in their field. Objective expert evaluation is used both in the recruitment stage and when the University is considering a promotion to the next level.
The evaluation process generally starts one year before a fixed-term contract ends and follows, to the extent possible, the (international) external evaluation process used when appointing professors.
