This year, the discipline of computer science taught by the two universities in Tampere rose to the ranking list of the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine in the category of computing and information technology.
Computer science at Tampere University of Technology went up to places 251–300 in THE ranking. Computer science from the University of Tampere was included in places 301–400.
The rise onto the list was influenced by the fact that this year the 400 best universities with computer science were included in the ranking. Two years ago, only 100 universities and a year ago 300 universities were included.
Mechanical engineering at Tampere University of Technology was ranked by THE in the category of Engineering & Technology where it stayed in the places 301–400 as in the previous year.
At the new Tampere University, the two largest faculties in terms of student numbers provide teaching and research in the fields that were included in this ranking. The Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences has over 5,000 and the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences over 4,000 students.
The total number of students at the new university that will start operations in January 2019 is nearly 20,000 students. The number of students at Tampere Universities of Applied Sciences, which is also a member of the Tampere university community, is about 10,000 students.
