The process of appointing the Deans of the new Tampere University was completed on Friday, 12 October 2018. Upon the proposal of President Mari Walls, the Transitional Board appointed DSocSci Juho Saari as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
Doctor of Social Science Juho Saari has been a professor of social and health policy at the University of Tampere (UTA) since 2016. Before his appointment at UTA, Saari held a professorship in welfare sociology at the University of Eastern Finland. He has previously worked, for example, at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. Besides holding several positions of trust, Saari has served on numerous scientific and scholarly societies and on the Boards of companies and communities. He sits on the Strategic Research Council of the Academy of Finland.
The Transitional Board has earlier appointed PhD Martti Kauranen as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, DTech Antti Lönnqvist as the Dean of the Faculty of Built Environment, PhD Päivi Pahta as Dean of the Faculty of Education and Culture, DTech Matti Sommarberg as Dean of the Faculty of Management and Business, MD Tapio Visakorpi as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology, and DTech Jyrki Vuorinen as Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences.
Eight women and 20 men applied for the seven deanships, and Tampere University received a total of 108 applications for the positions. The Deans will take up their new roles on 1 January 2019.
PhD Mari Walls assumed her responsibilities as President of the new Tampere University in August 2018. Provost DTech Jarmo Takala, Vice President for Research MD Juha Teperi, and Vice President for Education DAdmin Marja Sutela have also already taken up their new appointments. The process of recruiting the third vice president, who will oversee innovation activities and partnerships, is still underway.
“Professor Juho Saari is widely acclaimed for his expertise in social and health policy and welfare research. In him our new University will get a Dean who highlights the importance of social science research and promotes multidisciplinary collaboration,” says President Mari Walls.
