Microsoft Office 365 service
Office 365 is a service package that contains a large selection of tools, such as email, a calendar and storage space at a cloud service as well as applications that support joint writing projects and interaction. The service is intended for the university students and staff members.
The user ID of students is in format email@example.com and of staff members firstname.lastname@example.org.
Basic user account is your personal user account that you use to log in to the university's general electronic services.
Note! The login address of Skype for Business is your name-based email address.
The applications of university's O365 service
You can usually find the applications of Office 365 service in the menu of the service's upper left-hand corner. The purpose of use of the most important applications has been summarised below.
The O365 email can be used through the browser (Office 365 webmail) or via a separate email application for your computer or phone. Through the Internet browser you can access your email on any device and you can also manage the various settings of your account more extensively than through the separate application. In this service, your email address is in format email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org. Email offers 50 GB of storage space and it is protected against malware.
You can use your calendar by logging in to the Office 365 service or, alternately, through a separate application installed on your own device. The availability status in your calendar is visible to all students and staff members. However, other users cannot see more detailed information about your calendar events without you giving them more extensive rights. Through the calendar, you can send meeting invites and attach notes to events or a link to an online meeting. You can also make reservations to some of the university's meeting premises.
The Groups function is included in the email (not in the menu). You can create public and closed groups and add members to a group. In the group's working area you automatically gain access to a discussion area, a calendar, file area and a notebook, which all the group members can use together.
Microsoft Teams is a chat-centered workspace in Office 365. It brings people, conversations, files, and tools into one place, so everyone has instant access to everything they need.
Skype for Business
Skype for Business application is located in the right-hand side of the O365 service's top bar (not in the waffle menu). When you use the Skype for Business service through your browser, it acts as an instant messaging service (chat). When installed on the computer, Skype for Business enables, in addition to instant messaging, organising online meetings and participating in them as well as making phone calls and video calls. You can download the application onto your home computer with the Office Pro Plus software package. The university's permanent computers have the application installed as a default.
OneDrive storage space online
The files you have stored into your OneDrive storage space can be viewed and used on any device through the web server. The files can also be shared with others for viewing or editing through the service. For staff members, the available storage space is 1 TB and for students 25 GB.
OneDrive - University of Tampere is a storage space related to the university's Office 365 package, and it is separate from the consumer service. If you already have OneDrive storage space from Microsoft's consumer service, you can connect it to OneDrive.
Office 365 service offers you the access to Microsoft Office's Word, Excel and PowerPoint software, the files of which you can edit directly through your web browser.
Yammer is a messaging tool developed for organisations. It is a service somewhat similar to Facebook, where each user creates their own profile. Messaging through Yammer takes place in groups. All university's staff members and students are automatically included in Yammer's All company group. Note! If you do not specifically address your message to another group, it will be automatically shown to the staff members and students of the entire university (All company group).
All users can establish new, private or public groups. The old groups established with uta.fi addresses are also still available in Yammer. At this stage, Yammer can be used as an informal communication tool in addition to other internal communication channels of the university.
OneNote is a notebook application, in which you can create note files and pages filled with text, images, links and videos, for example. The note pages do not need to be saved separately, and they can also be used with mobile devices through the browser. OneNote also enables joint writing. You can share the notebook pages and edit them with others simultaneously.
Sway enables you to create demonstrative online materials, presentations and teaching materials. These materials can contain text, images, videos, sound files and animations. Sway can be used with various screens, including mobile devices, and it is automatically scaled to the device and the size of the screen.
You can publish your Sway or share it with other users.
Class notebook is a OneNote notebook intended for teaching, in which the teacher can manage the users of the notebook and the content shown to them. Class Notebook features three parts:
1. Content library: Only the teacher has the right to write into the content library. The students may only read the pages.
2. Collaboration space: Everyone can read and edit the pages of the collaboration space.
3. Student's notebook: Every student has their own section, which only the student and the teacher can see.
Forms software enables the creation of surveys and their easy distribution to participants. The software has various question types, e.g. multiple-choice, quizzes, open responses. It is also possible to take the surveys with mobile devices. Through the software, the answers can be viewed either as compiled or individually.
Planner is a tool for managing projects, assignments and group work. With the help of Planner, you can create assignment units, schedule and describe the assignments included in it, and determine a person in charge of them. Through Planner, the group can monitor the timetable and progress of the assignment and the entire project. Planner has been integrated with the Group feature so that each group created in the O365 automatically has their own plan in Planner, and a group will be created automatically for all plans built in Planner.
